Beauty DIY: Make a sage and grapefruit body scrub

This body scrub will leave your whole body feeling clean, soft and moisturized. Sage improves the appearance of your skin by promoting cell renewal and increasing circulation, which reduces the appearance of cellulite.

Additionally, sage has been known to alleviate and even treat annoying skin conditions such as athlete’s foot, eczema and psoriasis. The grapefruit in the scrub is used to reduce inflammation caused by dry or irritated skin as well as protecting the skin against UV damage. Lastly, the sea salt, date sugar and olive oil exfoliate and moisturize your skin, leaving it silky smooth.

What is date sugar, you ask? Date sugar is a healthy sugar alternative made of 100 percent dehydrated dates. Not only does it make a great ingredient to a body scrub, but is also great for cooking! Take note, though, that it doesn’t dissolve well in liquids! You can buy it by the container at grocery stores such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.

What you will need:

  • Blender
  • Medium/large bowl
  • Measuring spoon
  • Measuring cup
  • Mixing spoon
  • Zester or food processor

Beauty ingredients:

  • 2 cups fine sea salt
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 1 package fresh sage (about 4 to 6 leaves)
  • 1/2 cup date sugar
  • 1 grapefruit (white or red)

Directions:

  1. In a blender, puree together olive oil and sage on high for one minute.
  2. Pour mixture into sea salt and date sugar; mix well.
  3. Zest all rind off grapefruit and mix zest into salt mixture (You can also cut the rind off of the grapefruit and place it in a food processor until the pieces are finely chopped.)
  4. In your shower after cleansing, turn water off or away.
  5. Take one tablespoon of salt scrub (or more if needed) in your hands. Massage and polish all over your body in a circular motion.
  6. The natural sea salt is great for detoxifying the body, so allow it to sit on your skin for one minute, and then rinse with warm water. Your skin will feel amazing!

Keep remaining salt scrub in the refrigerator in between uses. It will last about 14 days.
