Friday’s Fashion Fails: Melissa McCarthy and Kerry Washington

Melissa McCarthy

Black is usually a stylish, safe and slimming bet, but this outfit that Melissa McCarthy chose for the MTV Movie Awards is none of the above. We’re not quite sure what it is… a peplum pantsuit, perhaps? The presenter and actress wore this unfortunate getup to walk the carpet at the show in LA.

Sadly, she designed this pantsuit in conjunction with Daniela Kurrle and all the draping is unflattering on her voluptuous figure. The peplum piece, along with tight cuffs on the legs, adds bulk to her frame. We’d definitely lose the peplum and the cuffs and let the pants skim the ground as widelegs.

Those shoes have also got to go. It’s nearly summer and you’re in Hollywood… time to put the closed-toe booties away for the winter, Melissa! And take it easy on the chunky jewelry, please.

The final verdict? It’s important to dress for your body type, but we honestly can’t imagine who this ensemble would have looked good on.

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington usually has amazing style and was one of our best dressed picks from the Oscars, but she made a style misstep at the MTV Movie Awards. The Django Unchained starlet chose this black and orange Michael Kors mullet gown.

We think removing the oversized orange part of the dress altogether and simply wearing the long sleeved black dress underneath would have saved this look. But that wide, oversized orange piece just isn’t doing anything for Kerry’s amazing body. This dress is making a statement, but it’s not a good one.

Like Melissa, her Roger Vivier shoes seem off-season to us as well. We would have added a bright strappy sandal.

The final verdict? We applaud Kerry for not being afraid to take fashion risks, but they can’t always pay off. We know she’ll bounce back at the next red carpet!
