Fall 2013 beauty roundup: The top Fashion Week trends

Our fave trends for fall

Have you ever dreamt of visiting New York, London, Milan and Paris all in one month? Not to worry, here is your chance to do it all and see it all as I am giving you the scoop on the hottest makeup trends seen on the fall 2013 runways during Fashion Week month.

The bare face

Let’s get right to it by reviewing the landslide impact the minimal chic look had everywhere. It is by far the look of choice by many designers such as Akris, Isabel Marant, Valentino and Haider Ackermann. In this case, skin was the word du jour as it plays a pivotal role in providing an effortless comfort and laissez faire that heightens the overall image projection of these women’s styles. It says, “I am confident; I don’t need a mask and I am strong and beautiful as is.”

Tinted moisturizers, liquid base concealers or spot application of foundation are the best tools to achieve this bare effect, while leaving good skin untouched. Lightweight mascara and groomed brows are also de rigueur to sharpen up features without overwhelming them. I personally love pairing this makeup style with statement-ready clothes as the perception is that one did not have to work hard at all to look this chic.

The updated vamp

The past year or so has seen its fair share of bright red lips. Case in point: the latest star-studded Oscar red carpet. For fall 2013, the reds in question have taken a plunge in deeper, murkier territories to emerge as these dangerous hues of wine — Bordeaux and plums. Not for the faint of heart, this updated spin on the vamp look is very much drawing inspiration from the latest Bond femme fatale rather than the power suited business woman showing up for a hostile takeover meeting. Or, maybe it is that same businesswoman, but only after working hours at her local absinthe bar praying on her next victim…

To best achieve this look, make sure to have a matching deep lip pencil in hand to refine the outer contour of your lips. These kinds of raisin colors tend to easily display unevenness of line and feathering. That is also the reason why you would be best leaving the gloss out of the equation but rather softly blot with a tissue any excess of moisture. Look for the latest backstage pictures from Miu Miu, Lanvin, Fendi, Bottega Veneta and Zac Posen as a reference.

Grunge encore

What goes around comes around yet again! The grunge look is back already (wasn’t it yesterday?). I am sure you are all having visions of Courtney Love in her skimpy lingerie stage accoutrement, but rest assured, she was nowhere near the runways this time around, only her spirit. Leave it to Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent Paris, Prada, Cavalli and Genny to reference the high priestess of grunge to push forward their design aesthetics.

Black kohl-rimmed eyes areyour piece de resistance, but make sure not to spend too much time fussing and blending your eyeliner to keep it all edgy and slept in looking. Skin coverage is yet again minimal and the hair is slightly bed head looking or casually gelled back for a complete rendition.

Now that I just might have saved you thousands of dollars in flight tickets, you can safely head down to the cosmetic aisles to spend your very hard-earned money in exchange for a couple of beauty must-haves and a worldly look to boot!
