Eyelash curler
Mascara will only take you so far, and if you really want to add curl and volume to your lashes, we suggest investing in a good quality curler that will really make your eyes stand out. By taking the time to lightly curl your lashes before applying mascara, you’ll see much more length and wow factor than if you relied on mascara alone. One of the best curlers we’ve tried is the shu uemura eyelash curler ($20) which tops most best-of beauty lists year after year for good reason. It’s well-constructed, easy to use and perfectly suited to all eye shapes.

Good powder brush
The trick to applying powder is to do it with a light hand since too much can end up looking cakey or too obvious. Steer clear of that unsightly issue by applying loose or pressed powder with a large, soft powder brush that will ensure even yet barely-there coverage. Try Bobbi Brown’s powder brush ($60) for a foolproof way to get the perfect amount of powder every time you apply.

Oil blotting papers
While not technically a tool, these oil-eliminating papers make a helpful addition to any beauty bag. Unlike when you use powder to minimize shine, these discreet little papers (or linens, as they’re sometimes called) don’t add more makeup to your look or mess with your foundation. They’re easy to tote in even the smallest clutch and they really are a must-have — especially when someone gets out their phone to snap a picture. We like Sephora Collection Blotting Papers, which come infused with a variety of targeted skin care ingredients ($12).

Concealer brush
Trying to cover up a zit or dark circles can be tough to do with your fingers, especially if you’re trying to create natural-looking coverage (which, let’s face it, is the only way to go). Rather than have your zit look even more prominent after trying to conceal it, make the cover-up process even more precise with a concealer brush. We’re partial to this one from MAC Cosmetics ($23) which makes blending ultra-easy.

Q-tips
Whether you botched your mani, over-applied eye shadow or just need to even out some other makeup mishap, there are countless uses for Q-tips when it comes to beauty. Stash a few in your makeup bag, a bunch in your purse (in case of a beauty emergency) and leave a few in the car so you’ll be ready for anything, any time. Best of all: They’re ultra-cheap!
