Obagi Hydrate Moisturizer

Product review

Miracle Moisture?

When anti-aging skin care giant Obagi recently launched a new moisturizer, dermatologists were buzzing about the long-lasting protection. But is this miracle cream worth the price? SheKnows put Obagi Hydrate to the test.

What it promises

According to Obagi, Hydrate isn’t just an ordinary lotion. It is formulated to provide long-lasting hydration for all-day moisture protection. It contains Hydromanil, a technologically advanced ingredient, which retains water and gradually delivers moisture to the skin, so not only does it provide immediate moisturizing, it also continues to hold water in the layers of your skin over time. In fact, as demonstrated in a moisturization study, Hydrate provides eight-hour moisture protection.

This gentle, hypoallergenic formula also contains other natural ingredients such as shea butter, mango butter and avocado to help combat skin dryness without clogging your pores. Designed for all skin types, Hydrate is dermatologist-tested to be non-irritating and non-sensitizing, so you can be sure that it’s been clinically proven to be safe.

How it held up

The moisturizer feels like your everyday face lotion, but the difference is in its longevity. Several hours after application my skin felt remarkably smooth and hydrated. I expected it to leave a greasy or oily residue, but it didn’t. My foundation went on smoothly and didn’t get thinned out.

The bottom line

At $40 or so a bottle, I found myself using smaller amounts of the product to help keep it from running out too fast.

Although many users buy Obagi products online, the manufacturer says it should be bought in a doctor’s office. The moisturizer is also meant to be used with the Nu-Derm line, although you certainly can use it independently. I am not sure if this product is best for those with significant dryness, but it seems to complement a daily skin care and makeup routine.

Overall, I have to give kudos to the Obagi line. I didn’t believe skin care products could provide dramatic results. But when my friend credited Obagi for her flawless skin, not her gene pool, I wanted to give it a try.

In addition to Hydrate, I tried out a bunch of other Obagi products. For the past two weeks, I cleaned my face every morning and night with the CLENZIderm, then I use either a dollop of Exoderm or C-clarifying serum. Applying the Hydrate moisturizer completes the routine. Overall, my skin has improved dramatically in just a few weeks. Some dark spots have faded and my complexion appears brighter. It is a significant investment, with some products costing more than $75, along with a visit to a dermatologist, but I could justify that investment if I skip expensive spa facials and opt instead for a daily skin care routine that will give me lasting results over the long term.
