Downton Abbey–inspired couture? It’s coming

Do you drool over the Edwardian-era outfits every time you watch Downton Abbey? Well, you might be rocking a Crawley family-esque outfit soon: The production company behind the drama is planning on a fashion and home goods line.

“We’ll be working across an entire range of products coming out this year. From fashion, apparel and homeware and furniture to wallpapers, beauty products and stationary,” executive producer Gareth Neame told CNBC.

And why not? Retailers in the U.K. are selling out of arm-length gloves, waistcoats and fur capes — all because of the show.

“Some of these things have been available since 2012 and we publish books and have made a music album, but the more complex products take time,” Neame added.

Why the wait? No one was expecting the show to take off the way it did, and now they’re playing catch-up.

Neame explained: “It’s a very slow burn the moment you get into retail, it’s extremely cautious, it has to test the established brand… No one wants to launch products if the show’s going to be a flop.”

Show- and movie-inspired fashion lines are nothing new. Networks routinely license show names for branding on everything from hats to T-shirts and sunglasses. Banana Republic recently teamed with AMC to release a Mad Men–themed collection. And a collection inspired by the upcoming release of The Great Gatsby is on sale now at Brooks Brothers.

Personally, we can’t wait to see what the minds behind Downton Abbey come up with for the capsule collection. In the meantime, we’ll just keep scouring vintage shops and Etsy for our own Edwardian-inspired looks.
